Celebrating Success To celebrate the turnaround that's underway at Metcalfe Elementary School, which is one of Gainesville for All's two focus schools in the Gainesville Empowerment Zone ,we served breakfast to faculty and staff this morning. We had a great time meeting and mingling with the people with boots on the ground. They're the ones who led the way in moving the school from a "D" to a "B" state rating under the leadership of principal Jacquette Rolle. We look forward to helping to continue significant improvements in the school year ahead. We also look forward to getting to know better staff and faculty at our second GEZ focus school -- Rawlings Elem -- as school reopens next week. Rawlings improved its state grade from a "D" to a "C". Bravo! Change is here and GNV4ALL is pleased to be part of it. James F. Lawrence Dir., GNV4ALL ... See more
Thanks to Dr. Grant Harrell of UF and his Mobile Outreach Clinic as well as the county health department and UF's dental school for holding a back to school event this afternoon in the Gainesville Empowerment Zone at the request of GNV4ALL. More than 60 kids of all ages received free immunizations and physicals , along with dental and health assessments. A major problem that quickly became apparent today was that Medicaid eligible children aren't getting the health care they need for a variety of reasons. That's an issue our GEZ teams will be looking into this fall. ... See more
We're pleased that Alachua County School Superintendent Karen Clarke will be our featured speaker at Gainesville for All's next general meeting which has been rescheduled to May 14, 6:30 p.m. at Rawlings Elem. School. Ms. Clarke will talk about the district's equity efforts and partnering with GNV4ALL's Gainesville Empowerment zone.
Good crowd today at town hall meeting seeking response from Gainesville's most influential institutions to last year's equity and disparities report. Thumb up to local NAACP and United Church of Gainesville's Racial Justice Taskforce. Didn't hear much that will move the needle in a broad and impactful way. Bottom line: There is still much to be done. Gainesville for All remains committed to pushing forward. ... See more
Here's what Laura Creamer, principal at Rawlings Elementary, had to say after Gainesville for All met at her school on March 12. Rawlings and Metcalfe Elementary Schools are the two focus schools of GNV4ALL 's Gainesville Empowerment Zone: I truly appreciate all of the offers of help I have received after the GNV4ALL meeting. I have had opportunities to meet with the Gainesville Empowerment Zone over the last several months but this was my first GNV4ALL meeting. After speaking briefly with the assembled large group, groups split up and I met with the Education group. The outpouring of support and offers of help were simply amazing. Mentors (aka Encouragers) are one area of need at Rawlings and I explained that we have a waiting list of 20+ students looking for mentors. From this request came ideas of ways to recruit and promote new mentors, new mentor signups and ideas for other ways to work with the students at Rawlings. I did not have an opportunity to get around to the other groups that were meeting, but from these groups I have received emails from individuals offering support and additional resources. Again, I am overwhelmed with the giving spirit and desire to make a difference that the GNV4ALL members have shown. The work GNV4ALL is putting in at Rawlings and Metcalfe, their focus schools, is going to make a difference. ... See more
